by Cyndi Michener Layout Basics: Visual Triangles (Dec. 07)

I know you know what it feels like to complete a layout that just “feels right.” It’s not just using the newest products or the right colors that create that feeling, although of course they’re important and fun! That satisfying sensation is achieved by creating balance on your layout.

Whether looking at art, photos, or scrapbook layouts, our eyes attempt to recognize known shapes and patterns. Creating a visual triangle aids in leading the viewer’s eye through the layout and connects elements together. Group photos, embellishments, or design elements into threes to balance a layout and pull items together into a single image. Design principles also suggest that an odd number of items are more visually appealing than an even number.

In the layout to the right, I used three different green elements to draw the viewer through my title, across the page and down.

Shawna used a trio of felt shapes to create her visual triangle.

Maegan created a triangle from hearts and buttons to tie her two-page spread together.

Anne used color to create her triangle.

Visual triangles are just one method of creating a balanced, cohesive layout. Try adding a trio of elements to your next page to pull it all together!
