Using Negative Space on Photos

by Kristi Hellyer

As a scrapbooker, you likely have heard about the rule of thirds when it comes to page design and taking pictures.  Having your subject off center and leaving some 'negative space' in your photograph is very pleasing to the eye.  The great thing about this extra space is you don't necessarily have to leave it blank when you are scrapping - have some fun with that negative space!  Embellishing right on top of a photograph can bring more interest to a scrapbook page and even make that photograph  more of a focal point.  Take a peek at what our Booya Girls have come up with:

Kimber put her title right on her photograph.  Red letters draw attention to the toys, and the three word stickers make a sort of visual bridge from her journaling to the photo.

Chrys used two photos on her page, and also stuck her title right on top of both of them, surrounding the birds and drawing attention to them.  The layered stickers make these photos blend right into her page for a cohesive look.

Amanda chose to make good use of some black space in her photograph.  The names really 'pop' because of that black space and it is clear to the viewer who is in the photo.

Maegan's photo has a great blurred background, perfect for journaling.  Her handwriting extends from the page to the picture, and brings great emotion to the whole thing.

I chose to use a tiny paper punch to cut stars out of my photograph, letting the black cardstock show thru.  Then I used those punched stars as embellishments around the title for a uniform look.
