Working With Sketches Feb. 08
I used a sketch designed by Becky Fleck for www.pagemaps.com to challenge the ladies to think outside the box when using sketches. We often have several great sketches at our fingertips but I find that scrappers are still intimidated by a sketch if it doesn’t fit their photos/needs exactly. The sketch allowed for 8 photographs, but what if you don’t have 8? Many of the photos are shown cropped into a circle on the sketch, but what if your photo can’t be cropped? What if you’re not a scrapbooker at all? Let’s take a look at how the design team faced these challenges.

Kim took the right side of the sketch. She generally kept the composition the same but did not crop her photos into a circle. She also replaced the flower embellishment with her title.

Lacintha used the left hand side of the layout. She flipped the side upside down, making her title at the bottom of the page. She cropped one of her photos into a circle, but used a pattern paper circle to take the place of another photo, and topped it with journaling. You can always take the “block” allotted for a photo and put pattern paper in its place if you do not have enough photographs. She also changed the layout to 8.5x11.

Anne used the right hand side of the sketch and created an altered CD case. She omitted the strip on the bottom of the layout and opted for vertical pattern paper strips. Where there was to be photos, she used elements! If there is a sketch where you do not like the title placement, swap the title out with embellies and add your title wherever.

I took the simple approach. I copied the sketch almost exactly, only adding another strip of paper and changing the flower embellies to more masculine stars.

Other ideas to try:
1. Flip the sketch on its side.
2. Make a card or gift bag using the sketch.
3. Condense a 2 page layout onto 1 page by cropping your photographs smaller.
I hope that you will find new ways to enjoy your sketches now.
