Brads 101

by Summer Fullerton

Everything old is new again. I can remember when I first used brads on one of my layouts. I often used them to hold down my journaling blocks – one brad in each corner. Design and product use have come a long way since then. Companies like Queen and Co., Bazzill and Basic Grey have changed how we look at brads. Queen & Co. released packages of brads in different shapes and patterns, Basic Grey released multi packs in 2 sizes and Bazzill just released paper brads that are over ˝ inch in diameter. If you are like me you have accumulated an over abundance of product. This month the Booya girls are taking on brads in masses.

Use your stash of brads as I did with this simple lining up technique. Draw a faint pencil line where you would like your row of brads on your layout. Pick a starting point and insert your brads alternating size and color. The end result is an eye-catching border. You can also use this technique to frame a photo or create a title.

Create eye catching elements for your next layout with brads, circles, a pen and embroidery floss. Layer the circles and brads in decorative patterns on your layout. Notice how Kimber used hers to frame the lower corner of her journaling block. Then she doodled on the circles and wrapped floss between the brads.

Debbie used this similar process in creating her scalloped brad border that frames her grandson’s photo. She mixed some larger brads for added interest.

Lacintha created this whimsical pattern which matches her layout perfectly using brads and a pen. Lightly doodle a pattern on your layout. Randomly place brads and then fill in the gaps with a coordinating colored marker.

Take a cue from Amanda and use your brads to highlight something on your layout. Amanda used brads to show off her title. By alternating the sizes of brads and placing them in a circle her title is spotlighted in a unique and creative way.
